What’s in your water?

The water you drink may be affecting your health and your household budget without you realizing it.

If you avoid drinking or cooking with tap water and choose bottled water or refillable water jugs instead, you may never have stopped to ask whether that is the best choice.

It is natural not to question a choice you have never had a reason to examine and have made out of habit.

Tests have found some of the same contaminants in bottled water and refillable-jug water as in tap water. Plastic can also introduce other concerns, including chemicals and micro- and nanoplastic particles. Disposable plastic waste also contributes to pollution in rivers and oceans.

Tap water may also have high hardness, which can leave mineral scale on surfaces. It is disinfected with chlorine or chloramines to control bacteria, and public water reports may list other substances, such as arsenic, hexavalent chromium, nitrates, and pesticides. Conditions vary by water system and service area.
